13-year-old cracks IIT exam, again:

ARA: A 13-year-old child prodigy from Bihar's Bhojpur district, who had created history by becoming the youngest student to clear the IIT-JEE entrance exam last year, had cracked the prestigious examination again with an improved ranking this year. Satyam Kumar, whose father is a farmer, secured an all India rank of 679. He had got 8,137th rank last year and took the exam again to improve his ranking. The boy had broken the record of Delhi's Sahal Kaushik last year. Kaushik had cracked the IIT-JEE exam when he was 14. Born on July 20, 1999, Satyam had shown exceptional talent since childhood. He left Patna's Central Public School to move to Kota in Rajasthan to join an IIT coaching institute. The institute's director, R K Verma, took his test and found his so talented that he helped finance his studies for one of the toughest examinations in the country. Satyam, who passed his Class X examination from a Kota school, said he wants to be a scientist to contribute to aeronautical and aerospace engineering. College students across India may beable to pick and choose standalone chapters in a variety of subjects. In a move towards interactive education,Attano, a store for interactive educational ebooks, has launched Chapter Buy. Students can now buy chapters from arange of books by publishers in subjects including Engineering, Management,Science, and Commerce. “Students in India are adopting technology. With over 10 million tablets andover 60 million Internet connected phones – this is a no brainer that in a matter of time most students will use these devices to study,” says DeepakSheth, Director, Sheth Publishers Pvt Ltd, who has tied up with Attano. Sheth believes that giving students the chance to make their own book is the way forward. Soumya Banerjee, CEO, Attano is optimistic about the initiative. “Chapter Buy starts at just Rs 3. The median price point across the 10,000+ chapters we are offering is approximately Rs40,” he says. Chapter Buy includes 900 books at present and includes both UG and PG programs. It also covers entrance exams. The chapters can be read on a free Attano Reader that can be downloaded from the Attano websites and can be usedon PCs, laptops, androids and ipads. IIM admissions 2013: Odisha's tribal youth gets into IIM

For the students of many tribal groups in Odisha, clearing the Class 10 exam is considered a huge achievement.But a little help can bring out the best as it did for Ganeswar Miniaka, who isall set to take admission into one of India's coveted B-schools. Miniaka, 20, who belongs to Odisha'sprimitive Kandha tribe, has been invited by several prestigious institutions,including Indian Institutes of Management (IIM), after he scored 56.46 percentile in the Common Admission Test (CAT) held in October last year -thanks to his efforts and the support provided to him by a private institution here. CAT is one of the most rigorous entrance examinations for business administration programmers, and the test score is used by the country's top B-schools to shortlist applicants for admissions. "Although I have got six calls including those from IIM-Raipur (Chhattisgarh), Kashipur (Uttarakhand) and Udaipur (Rajasthan), I have decided to join IIM-Triruchiapalli," Miniakatold IANS in an interview. Miniaka, a resident of Serigumma village in Rayagada district, about 550 km from here, attributes his success to his continuous efforts and the support he received from Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), which provided him free coaching, study environment and proper care. Located in Bhuvaneswar, KISS is hometo around 20,000 tribal children who receive free education from kindergarten(KG) to post-graduate (PG) level and vocational training. Miniaka was invited by KISS in 2010 to take admission in a three-year degree course after he passed the Class 12 examination with 68 percent marks from a college in the district head quarterstown of Rayagada. He cleared the commerce degree programme this year with distinction. "I used to help my father inagricultural work during my school days. I had never thought I would ever be able to study in a B-school. It has become possible only because of KISS,"he said. Miniaka's two elder brothers, one of whom has a bachelor's degree, are engaged in agricultural work. "My future plan is to help poor students of our community, he said.
