A Delhi Police constable's 18-year-old son has obtained the seventh rank in the OBC category in the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Joint Entrance Examination 2013.

Ashish Kumar Yadav, son of bomb detection squad member Radhey Shyam, cleared the exam without taking any coaching lessons, soon after scoring 82 percent marks in Class 12 from Haryana, a police officer said.

Ashish credited his parents and teachers for his achievement. His father said the young man used to study four to five hours every day.

There are 9,885 IIT seats on offer. Of these, 4,844 are for the general category students.

Satyam Kumar, a Bihar farmer's son who is just 13-years old, has cleared the fiercely competitive Indian Institute of Technology-Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) for which 150,000 candidates had appeared this year.

Satyam, who passed his class 12 exam last year, secured an impressive all-India rank of 679.

"We are proud of him. He has done something special at this age," Satyam's father Sidhnath Singh, a farmer, told IANS.

IIT-JEE (Advanced) results for admission into IITs were declared.

According to IIT-JEE website, Sahal Kaushik from Delhi was the youngest person to have cracked the exam in 2010 at the age of 14. But now this record is held by Satyam.

28 of the 30 studentsfrom Bihar's Super 30 free coaching centre cracked the Indian Institute ofTechnology-Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE).

Abhishek Kumar son of amechanic cleared the prestigious engineering exam. Abhishek aspires to becomean electrical engineer, a trait that runs in his genes.

Others students of Super30 like Bhanu Pratap son of Rampyare Pratap, a poor labourer from Uttar Pradeshalso cleared the exam.

Pranav Kumar fromSamastipur district in Bihar is the son of a landless farmer, Pankaj Kumar.Pranav studied in a government school. On cracking the exam, he said that AnandKumar "not only taught us but gave us the confidence to excel even in theface of odds".

When Ankit Kumar fromVaishali district in Bihar lost his father, a lineman in the telephonedepartment, in a road accident last year, his life seemed to come to astandstill.

"I came to know ofSuper 30 and cleared its screening test. Here, I seemed to have found my newfather," he said.

Shivangi Gupta, daughterof magazine vendor in Deha, 50 km from Kanpur, saw acute hardship from herchildhood as her father Viresh Chandra Gupta struggled to make both ends meet.

"I was provided allhelp and stayed in Anand Kumar's and finally cracked my dream exam,"Shivangi said.

Farhad and YasmeenShafi's son Hanjala has also made it through the IIT-JEE. Hanjala's parentshave a small shop in Patna. They somehow scraped together money to pay hisschool fees. "Today my son is set to go to IIT," said a proudYasmeen.

Santosh Kumar's fatherSanjeev Mallik from Madhubani is worried how he will pay his son's IIT fees,but he has faith in god to see them through. "I don't have the money tobuy him new clothes and books. But when god has brought him this far, he willtake care of his future also. I am a driver and don't even know what IITis," Mallik said.

A proud Afsar NathMishra, a Sanskrit teacher and priest from Banka, is proud that his daughterPreeti Kumari will be an engineer. "She will be our support when we areold," Mishra said.

IIT- JEE(Advanced) 2013: Online counseling ends

IIT- JEE(Advanced) 2013: Online counseling ends :

The online counseling for IIT- JEE(Advanced) 2013 will conclude today June 30. 

Students are required to select their course and institutes.

The seat allotments will be announced on July 2. Candidates will also need to verify their documents from July 4 to July 8.

The academic session will commence from July 27.

Total candidates qualified under Common Merit List are 15947. Candidates who have scored aggregate marks of 156 (upto CML Rank 7436) and above are being asked to fill choices for courses at IITs and ISM, Dhanbad where the total General Category seats available are only 4841.

The cut-off marks for admissions to Indian Institutes of Technology have been increased due to the top-20 percentile norm introduced by the Centre.

No advantage for students from higher scoring boards IIT-JEE 2013: 

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to normalize Class 12 board results.

This means that students from boards giving higher scores may no longer have an advantage.

Faculty from IIT Bombay had earlier stated that giving 40 percent weightage to Class 12 boards would result in weaker students gaining admissions to the IITs. This was because of the varying difficulty of boards across the country.

Students who sat for JEE (Main) will now look at two factors when normalizing results:

- Performance in JEE (Main)
- Performance of other students on the same school board

Over 10.5 lakh students sat for JEE (Main), out of which 1.5 lakh will gain admission to the 16 IITs and Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad.

Five subjects will be used for the normalization process:

- Physics
- Mathematics
- Biology OR Chemistry OR Biotechnology OR Computer Science
- One language
-Any subject other than the above
There have been no details from CBSE on whether answer keys will be published or when Paper 2 results will be declared.

IIT Bombay to launch Massive Open Online Courses:

IIT-B has collaborated with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard to launch Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs).  IIT Bombay has developed and deployed training programs, engaging thousands of participants at a time using Information and Communication Technologies.  The project aims to understand and solve issues in scaling up quality education using technology. Four from Andhra Pradesh make it to top 10 in IIT-JEE Advanced:

HYDERABAD: Two students from Hyderabad secured the top two ranks in the Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced), which guarantees admission in the IITs across the country. Two others from the state, including a girl student, made it to the top 10 out of the 1.15 lakh candidates who sat for the exam on June 2. Seventeen-year-old P Sai Sandeep Reddy, a resident of Prakasam district who studied in a school in Madhapur, secured the first rank with 332 marks out of 360, officials said. He was followed closely by A Ravi Chandra, a resident of Hyderabad, who got 330 marks, securing him the second rank. "I am a big fan of Harry Potter and I love to read story books whenever I get time," said an overjoyed Sai Sandeep Reddy. Son of a school teacher, Sandeep prepared hard for the exam by devoting 12-14 hours per day in the three months leading up to the JEE exam. "I am still dazed. I never thought I would top the exam," Sandeep said. The tall lanky boy, who dreams of carrying out research in robotics in IIT Mumbai, said he was immediately heading to the Shirdi Sai Baba temple with his parents to offer thanksgiving prayers. Ravi Chandra, son of a central government employee, said he wants to carry out research in computer sciences. "I expected to be among the toppers but never did I think that I would be able to secure the second rank," said Chandra, who studied in the same Madhapur institute as Sandeep. Asked what he did to blow off steam, he said he loved to watch films and added that his inspiration was his brother who is studying in IIT Madras. Out of the 1,15,971 candidates who took the exams, around 21,110 qualified. Two female candidates, including S Leena Madhuri from Tirupati, made it to the top 10 ranks for the first time. Leena, who stood eight with 314 marks said she studied for 15-16 hours leading up to the examination. "I also love playing chess and watch television," she said. Meanwhile, M Viswa Virinchi, a resident of Kukatpally, who secured the first rank with in the JEE (Mains) with 345 marks, had to be contended with seventh rank in the advanced exam. Virinchi, who secured 315 marks, said he used to spend his free time taking piano lessons and wants to be an engineer. The JEE Advanced results were declared two days in advance, but officials said the admissions would be done only from June 24 as planned. The examination had two objective papers comprising physics, chemistry and mathematics. Candidates have to qualify the exam to get admission into any of the 15 IITs in the country including IIT-Hyderabad. The JEE (main) scores were an eligibility test for the advanced exam. 13-year-old cracks IIT exam, again:

ARA: A 13-year-old child prodigy from Bihar's Bhojpur district, who had created history by becoming the youngest student to clear the IIT-JEE entrance exam last year, had cracked the prestigious examination again with an improved ranking this year. Satyam Kumar, whose father is a farmer, secured an all India rank of 679. He had got 8,137th rank last year and took the exam again to improve his ranking. The boy had broken the record of Delhi's Sahal Kaushik last year. Kaushik had cracked the IIT-JEE exam when he was 14. Born on July 20, 1999, Satyam had shown exceptional talent since childhood. He left Patna's Central Public School to move to Kota in Rajasthan to join an IIT coaching institute. The institute's director, R K Verma, took his test and found his so talented that he helped finance his studies for one of the toughest examinations in the country. Satyam, who passed his Class X examination from a Kota school, said he wants to be a scientist to contribute to aeronautical and aerospace engineering. IIT-JEE 2013: Diploma students not required give entrance exam

Candidates who want lateral entry into an Engineering degree do not need to sit for JEE or any entrance exam. The rule applies to candidates who have appeared for various polytechnic or engineering diploma programme from various State Board of Technical Education and applied for JEE (Main) examination. Candidates should have completed Engineering, Architecture or Pharmacy Diploma programmes from an AICTE-approved institutes with 45 percent to be elgible for the second year of a  4-year degree Engineering or Pharmacy and 5-year Architecture programme through lateral entry. Such a candidate need not give any entrance examination. If a diploma level candidate wishes to be admitted to first year of 4-year degree Engineering/Pharmacy or 5-year Architecture programme, then he is eligible on the basis of class 12 Certificate. OJEE entrance exam 2013: Counselling commences today

The Odisha Joint Entrance exam OJEE counselling has commenced. The counselling will take place from June 10-29. The exam was conducted on May 12, 2013. The first phase of counselling will be conducted from June 10 to 29. OJEE 2013 is the last state level test as from 2014 it will be part of level pre-admission test for admission in professional courses. Admissions in engineering, MBA, MCA, pharmacy and architecture courses in the state are done on the basis of OJEE. It is expected that about  one lakh students are expected to appear in the test. The government has also taken a decision to offer integrated and dual degrees in management and engineering programmes from the upcoming academic session. Cut-offs revised for IIT admissions:

HYDERABAD: Only those students who are among the top 20 percentilers in the Intermediate Public Examination (IPE) while considering all the subjects would be eligible to take admission in the IITs in the country this year. This means that a general category student would have to score 437 marks or above out of 530 to become eligible.

 Earlier, the top 20 percentile criteria took into account only the marks scored in Maths, Physics and Chemistry. But the authorities have decided to take into account all the subjects now. Following this, sources in the Board of Intermediate Education detailed the cut-off marks for students of different categories. While it would be 457 for general category students, it would be 428, 387 and 396 for OBC, SC and ST candidates respectively.

In percentile scores, general category students, who get 79.63 percentile, will qualify for admissions. Percentiles required for other categories are 79.607 for SCs, 79.55 for STs, 79.69 for OBC and 79.68 for differently-abled category. A total of 1.5 lakh candidates had written the JEE-Advanced examination on June 2.

Sources from the secondary education department said that officials calculated the top 20 percentile as several requests were coming from parents and students asking for the same. "The document is, however, not final as the actual calculations are to be done by IIT-Kanpur which is in charge of conducting the examination. IIT-Kanpur will announce the results," an official said.

The rule under which intermediate marks are taken into account while fixing the eligibility criteria for students was introduced this year. Till last year, only performance of candidates in the competitive examination (JEE) was considered.

IIT entrance eligibility cut-off placed at 78.2%:

MUMBAI: IIT aspirants from CBSE Class XII have to score at least 78.2% to be in the Top 20 percentile of candidates for entrance exam eligibility. They must have also qualified in JEE (Main) exam to be able to appear for JEE (Advanced), to be held on June 2. The CBSE announced the cut-off score on Monday. With the two-tier exam process, students who have qualified in JEE (Main) will be eligible to appear for JEE (Advanced) provided they fall in the Top 20 percentile in their respective boards. While the cut-off for the general category of students is 391, that for students in the OBC category is 389, and 350 and 338 for SC and ST categories, respectively.
